LEVANT
Back to Balweyth page

Levant is another location along Cornwall's Tin Coast. Copper and Tin were mined here for generations, with the mine getting the nickname 'Champion Mine' because of its rich abundance of both materials. Arsenic was also mined here as a by-product of the tin ore.

The mine extended almost a mile out under the seabed and reached depths of over 600m. In 1857 a man engine was installed to transport men in and out of time mine more easily and quickly. However in 1919, the man engine broke and collapsed killing 31 men. The mine was never the same after the accident and closed in 1930 as a result of the economic depression which plummeted the prices of Tin.
