BOTALLACK
Back to Balweyth pageBotallack is arguably the most iconic mine along Cornwall's Tin Coast. The mine is home to one of the most photographed set of engine houses, the Crowns engine houses. Perched on the foot of the cliffs, Botallack boasts breathtaking views with the engine houses looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. The engine houses here are most known for their use in the BBC drama series 'Poldark'. Other industrial remains are scattered all over the the landscape including chimney stacks and the Arsenic Labyrinth.
Botallack's mining history dates back to as early as the Seventeenth Century. The tunnels here at Botallack stretch for more than a mile out under the Atlantic Ocean. The mine remained highly successful until the 1870's, and eventually closed in 1895. During its working career, the mine here produced 20,000 tonnes of Tin, 15,000 tonnes of Copper and 1500 tonnes of Arsenic. Attempts to reopen the mine were made, but eventually closed for good in February 1914 as a result of the mining depression.
